14 August: what is celebrated today

14 August is one of those dates when the calendar fills with curious, symbolic and sometimes rather peculiar celebrations. From learning about reptiles or removing a tattoo to make way for a new stage, the day brings together stories that are unlike each other but together create a unique portrait of creativity, care and change.

World Lizard Day

At the beginning of the 21st century, this observance emerged to highlight the importance of conserving these reptiles. There are between 6,000 and 7,300 species in the world, from tiny geckos barely three centimetres long to the imposing three-metre Komodo dragon. Some change colour, others shed their tails to escape predators, and some expel blood from their eyes as a defence. Their role in ecosystems is vital, and this day invites us to learn about them, respect them and protect them from threats such as illegal wildlife trafficking or habitat loss.

Inter-American Air Quality Day

Every second Friday in August, Inter-American Air Quality Day is commemorated, an initiative promoted by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (AIDIS). The day seeks to raise awareness of the effects of air pollution on health and the environment, promoting measures to reduce emissions and improve the air we breathe. It also recalls the importance of adopting more sustainable habits and protecting the most vulnerable communities in the face of this environmental challenge.

Tattoo Removal Day

This date recognises those who decide to remove a tattoo and, in doing so, close a chapter of their lives. It may be because of changing tastes, to leave a memory behind or simply to seek a clean canvas on the skin. Thanks to modern techniques, it is an increasingly safe and less painful process. More than an aesthetic act, this day symbolises the possibility of reinvention: one can always rewrite one’s own story.

14 August, more than a simple date, is a collage of gestures and meanings: caring for what is fragile, freeing creativity, learning from nature and embracing change. A day to look at the world from unusual angles.
