World Youth Skills Day
World Youth Skills Day, celebrated every 15 July, was proclaimed in 2014 to underline an idea as simple as it is decisive: access to education and vocational training largely determines the place young people will occupy in society. It is not only about employment, but also participation, autonomy and the ability to build one’s own life projects.
The observance focuses on a persistent paradox. Although young people are an essential driver of social development, they remain one of the groups most exposed to unemployment, precariousness and inequality, especially young women and vulnerable groups. The shortcomings of many educational systems, disconnected from the real needs of the contemporary world, widen that gap rather than closing it.
In recent years, the debate has shifted strongly towards digital skills and artificial intelligence. In the midst of technological transformation, the question is no longer only what jobs will exist tomorrow, but what capabilities will allow young people to adapt, reinvent themselves and avoid exclusion. Training today means learning to live alongside technology, but also to understand its limits, impacts and responsibilities.
However, talking about skills does not mean talking solely about technique. It also means learning to collaborate, communicate, solve complex problems and sustain oneself emotionally in uncertain contexts. Every 15 July, this day reminds us that investing in young people is not a long-term bet: it is an immediate necessity for building fairer, more resilient societies capable of imagining a shared future.
