17 September: what is celebrated today
The 17 September calendar brings a curious combination of observances: World Patient Safety Day, which recalls the importance of safe, quality medical care; International Country Music Day, which pays tribute to one of the 20th century’s most influential musical genres; and, in some places, celebrations as peculiar as Melilla Day in Spain or International Gnome Day, which add a cultural and playful note to the day.
World Patient Safety Day
Since 2019, the Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) has declared 17 September the official date for reinforcing the importance of safety in healthcare.
2024 slogan: Correct diagnoses, safe patients
The 2024 edition focuses on diagnoses, recalling that an accurate diagnosis not only saves lives, but also prevents harm, unnecessary costs and loss of confidence in health systems.
Patient safety forms part of the 2030 Agenda, whose aim is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages. However, the data are worrying:
143 million people suffer harm every year because of a lack of hospital safety.
2.6 million deaths a year are recorded for this reason.
40% of primary-care patients suffer some preventable harm.
Healthcare errors account for up to 15% of hospital budgets.
Promoting a culture of safety requires everyone’s involvement: patients, professionals and governments. Safer care not only saves lives; it also builds confidence and sustainability in health systems.
International Country Music Day
17 September also has a festive note. International Country Music Day is celebrated in honour of Hank Williams (1923-1953), a legendary figure who shaped this musical genre.
The commemoration began in 2003, although some historical traces place its origins in the 1920s, when country music began to establish itself as one of the most authentic expressions of American popular culture.
Today, country music is celebrated with festivals, concerts and competitions in different parts of the world, bringing together established artists and new talents who keep this tradition alive.
Other curious celebrations
In addition to the above, 17 September also coincides with:
Melilla Day in Spain, which commemorates the incorporation of the city into the Corona de Castilla in 1497.
International Gnome Day, a fun and picturesque date that recalls the magic of these fantasy characters in gardens, stories and popular traditions.
