19 January arrives wrapped in three different atmospheres, as if the calendar wished to gather under the same date the whiteness of winter, inner seeking and the warm memory of a familiar scent. It is the day when the world celebrates snow as a natural gift and sporting landscape; reflects on religious diversity and peaceful coexistence; and pays tribute to a humble food that has become a social ritual: popcorn. World Snow Day
Every third Sunday in January, mountains and ski resorts celebrate the arrival of “white gold”. It is a day to enjoy sport —skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, tubing—, but also to remember that snow is a quiet pillar of the environment. Its winter accumulation feeds rivers and reservoirs in spring, regulates the climate and sustains fragile ecosystems. In times of accelerated thawing, this observance invites us not only to play, but to protect.
World Religion Day
Created in 1950 by the Bahá’í community, this day proposes something as simple as it is urgent: respect and dialogue among the world’s beliefs. Religions arose to answer profound questions —meaning, death, justice— and, although their paths diverge, they share a common aspiration: to understand the place of human beings in the universe. This date reminds us that coexistence is possible when the dignity of the other is recognised, whether they believe or think differently.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
From 18 to 25 January, churches around the world devote eight days to praying for unity and reflecting on reconciliation. The 2025 motto, «Do you believe this?», invites us to look at faith through coherence and compassion. Each day proposes a theme for reflection —justice, mercy, comfort for the oppressed— and culminates with Vespers at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. It is a reminder that spirituality can also be a social bridge.
Popcorn Day
And amid so much transcendence, a delicious celebration: Popcorn Day. The characteristic sound of the grain popping has accompanied rituals and gatherings for centuries. Today it remains the soundtrack to cinema and afternoons at home. In addition to its symbolic value, it is a food with a pre-Columbian history, nutritional benefits and dozens of names depending on the country: pochoclo, cotufas, crispetas, canguil, palomitas, pop… A universal tradition wrapped in a simple crunch.
