19 September: what is celebrated today
19 September is a day full of celebrations which, at first glance, seem unrelated, yet all reflect different aspects of everyday life: from what we put on the table to the way we speak and how we protect our health. On this date we commemorate the value of own brands, enjoy an aperitif, recall the importance of properly preventing and treating snake bites, and even allow ourselves to play at speaking like real pirates.
World Own Brand Day
So-called own brands or retailer brands have become an increasingly popular option among consumers. Their success lies in the combination of affordable prices and quality comparable to that of better-known brands.
The prejudices are gone: today, many own brands stand out in quality tests, expand the range of products and offer consumers transparency and confidence. For retailers, they are also a tool for building customer loyalty.
World Appetiser Day
Nothing is more characteristic of us than sharing a good appetiser. This tradition, which in Spain has different flavours depending on the region — from olives in Andalusia to pintxos in the Basque Country — is officially celebrated on 19 September.
An appetiser is much more than a moment before a meal: it is a space for meeting, conversation and gastronomic enjoyment that forms part of our culture.
International Snakebite Awareness Day
Not everything is a light-hearted celebration: this date also seeks to raise awareness of a global health problem. Every year, between 81,000 and 138,000 people die from snakebites, and as many again suffer serious after-effects.
The WHO recognises this situation as a neglected tropical disease, urging governments to improve prevention, access to antivenom and support for those affected, who often also face discrimination and social exclusion.
International Talk Like a Pirate Day
Arrgh, sailor! Since 1995, thanks to an idea by two American friends, 19 September has become a day to let out a “yo-ho-ho”, put on an eye patch and let the imagination run free.
What began as a joke went viral and is now celebrated in more than 40 countries, with references in video games, social media and even charitable campaigns. A perfect excuse to play with language and laugh a little at ourselves.
19 September invites us to reflect on consumption, enjoy our gastronomic traditions, remember global health challenges… and have fun playing at being pirates. An eclectic date that demonstrates the richness and diversity of international commemorative days.
