2 October: what is celebrated today
2 October is no ordinary day. It is a day on which the whole world raises its voice to remember that there is a power capable of transforming realities without shedding a drop of blood: non-violence. At the same time, it is a call to look directly at the silent suffering of millions of farm animals. Two different causes, one shared message: learning to live together with respect, empathy and coherence.
International Day of Non-Violence
More than a century ago, Mahatma Gandhi showed that peaceful resistance could bring down empires. His legacy lives on, and the UN honours it every 2 October with the International Day of Non-Violence.
It is not just a tribute, but an invitation to make peace a daily practice: in classrooms, at work, on social media and in our dealings with others.
World Farm Animals Day
On the same day, we also remember those who have no voice: farm animals. Hens, cows, pigs and chickens often live in conditions that have little to do with dignity. The NGO FARM promoted this date to make us reflect on how our consumption choices can alleviate — or perpetuate — that suffering.
Its coincidence with Gandhi's birthday is no accident: he understood that compassion should have no limits, and that true non-violence also extends to animals.
