23 March: what is celebrated today
23 March brings together very different celebrations, but connected by the same idea: what seems ‘technical’ (the weather, a lift, a learning habit, a financial decision) actually sustains everyday life and can save it, improve it or make it fairer.
World Meteorological Day
It commemorates the creation of the convention that gave rise to the World Meteorological Organization. Meteorology is not just «predicting whether it will rain»: it is a global network of observation and alerts that helps anticipate storms, floods, heatwaves, droughts or fires. In a context of climate change, the value of early-warning systems and international cooperation becomes crucial: timely information reduces risks and can save millions of lives.
World Learning Day
This day focuses on learning as a continuous practice, not limited to school or a stage of life. Learning today means adapting: acquiring skills, updating one's knowledge, filtering information, improving communication and remaining creative in changing environments. The central idea is simple: continuous training opens opportunities and strengthens personal and professional autonomy.
World Lift Day
A tribute to one of the inventions that transformed urban life: the lift made taller buildings, accessible travel and a different city possible. Beyond historical curiosity, it also recalls the value of “invisible” technology: the kind that is not usually celebrated, but makes the day work with less effort and greater safety.
Global Money Week (17–23 March)
During these days, financial education is promoted from an early age. The aim is to develop judgement: planning expenditure, understanding risks, recognising fraud, saving and making decisions with perspective. It is a week to reinforce simple habits that, in the long term, protect personal and family stability.
Week of Solidarity with Peoples Struggling against Racism and Racial Discrimination (from 21 March)
Promoted by the United Nations, it seeks to keep the issue on the public agenda beyond a single date. The week calls for reducing prejudice, strengthening equality policies and supporting communities affected by racism, xenophobia and exclusion.
French Language and Francophonie Week (16–24 March)
It celebrates French as a global language and the cultural diversity of the Francophonie. The week invites people to discover literature, cinema, music and thought in French, and also to value multilingualism as a form of cultural exchange and coexistence.
