International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff
This day, promoted by the United Nations, expresses support for humanitarian workers and staff linked to international missions who have been detained, kidnapped or gone missing while carrying out their work. In addition to being a tribute, it is a reminder that the protection of staff in the field cannot depend on luck: security, prevention, protocols and international responsibility are needed so that those who help do not become targets.
International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
The day invites us to look directly at one of history’s most devastating chapters: centuries of kidnapping, dehumanisation, forced labour and violence, sustained by racism and prejudice. The commemoration is not only about memory: it is also a call to combat the present-day consequences of that legacy, from structural discrimination to unequal opportunities, and to support historical education that does not trivialise what happened.
World Day of the Unborn Child
It is observed in several countries with a focus on defending life before birth and raising awareness about pregnancy. It is usually accompanied by public campaigns, events and messages intended to make the prenatal stage and associated social debates visible, according to the traditions and cultural frameworks of each place.
World Waffle Day / International Waffle Day
A delicious excuse to celebrate the waffle: golden batter, crisp texture, a perfect grid and a thousand possible accompaniments (fruit, cream, syrup, chocolate or a savoury version). It is associated with European traditions and, over time, became a popular celebration in many countries.
International Tolkien Reading Day
A date to return to Middle-earth: reread favourite passages, organise group readings, discuss adaptations and share recommendations. The idea is to celebrate the cultural strength of Tolkien’s work and the pleasure of reading fantasy as a collective experience, whether in libraries, schools, bookshops or at home.
National Transplant Day (Spain)
It is observed in Spain on the last Wednesday in March (in 2026 it falls on 25 March). It is a day to recognise donors and families, thank healthcare staff and remember that donation saves lives. It also serves to speak clearly about the importance of expressing one’s wish to donate and reducing waiting lists through information and awareness.
Week of Solidarity with Peoples Struggling against Racism and Racial Discrimination (from 21 March)
During this week, the message of zero tolerance for racism, xenophobia and discrimination is reinforced. It is a period for educational campaigns, social dialogue and public action aimed at real equality and respect for human dignity.
