27 August: what is celebrated today

Every 27 August, the world turns its attention to a natural treasure that often goes unnoticed but sustains life on the planet: lakes. World Lakes Day is celebrated on this date, an official initiative of the United Nations General Assembly that invites us to recognise the importance of these ecosystems for environmental balance and human wellbeing.

Lakes are not merely mirrors of water that beautify landscapes. They are vital sources of fresh water, indispensable for drinking, growing food, generating energy and sustaining unique biodiversity. They also act as climate regulators by storing carbon and mitigating the effects of climate change.

But these guardians of water face growing threats: pollution, overexploitation and global warming put their health, and ours, at risk.

World Lakes Day seeks to raise awareness, promote the sustainable management of these ecosystems and encourage society to protect and restore the world’s lakes, because their future — and ours — are intimately connected.
