27 September: what is celebrated today
27 September brings together commemorations that invite us to reflect and celebrate. From looking up at the stars, to appreciating the richness of tourism, thanking donors who save lives, and remembering the importance of protecting noble creatures like rabbits. A date that combines science, solidarity, culture, and environmental awareness.
Día Mundial de la Astronomía
Día Mundial de la Astronomía began in California (USA) in 1973 thanks to Doug Berger, then president of the Asociación Astronómica de California del Norte. Its aim was simple and ambitious at the same time: to bring the universe closer to ordinary people, placing telescopes in squares and parks so that everyone could marvel at the sky.
The motto «One People, One Sky», spread by the organisation Astronomers Without Borders, sums up the essence of this day: reminding us that, regardless of borders, we all share the same starry sky.
In 2025 it will be celebrated on 3 May (spring) and 27 September (autumn).
Día Mundial del Turismo
Since 1979, the Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT) has established 27 September as a date to pay tribute to an activity that connects cultures, drives economies and opens horizons.
Travel has become a global aspiration. The figures show it: from just 25 million international journeys in 1950, the total now exceeds 1.3 billion. Tourism moves not only money, but also stories, learning and encounters.
Among the reasons for this growth are the right to holidays, better working conditions, the expansion of the middle class, cheaper transport and, of course, the ease that new technologies provide for planning and dreaming about journeys.
Día Europeo del Donante de Médula Ósea
27 September is also a day of gratitude and awareness: Día Europeo del Donante de Médula Ósea is celebrated, established in 2013 by the Alianza de Trasplantes del Sur (France, Italy and Spain).
Bone marrow, the tissue hidden in our bones, makes red and white blood cells and platelets. Donating it can mean the difference between life and death for people with leukaemia, lymphoma or other serious illnesses.
Becoming a donor is offering another human being the possibility of regaining hope.
Día Internacional del Conejo
Every last Saturday in September is dedicated to rabbits, thanks to the British organisation Rabbit Charity. Día Internacional del Conejo seeks to protect this species, as beloved as it is threatened by hunting, experimentation, breeding for fur and the destruction of its habitat.
Beyond their tenderness, rabbits fulfil an essential ecological role: they disperse seeds, fertilise the soil and form part of delicate ecosystems. Recognising their value also means committing ourselves to their care.
Thus, 27 September becomes a multiple reminder: to look at the sky, travel the world with respect, value human generosity and defend life in all its forms.
