29 September: what is celebrated today

On 29 September, the calendar invites us to reflect on two essential aspects of our existence: heart health and food sustainability. Two different causes, but deeply connected, because a fairer and more balanced planet begins both by taking care of ourselves and by protecting the resources that sustain us.

World Heart Day

Since 2000, the World Heart Federation, with the support of the WHO, has designated 29 September as World Heart Day. The purpose is clear: to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases, which today are the leading cause of death in the world.

Every year, more than 17 million people lose their lives to heart attacks or strokes, and projections indicate that annual deaths could exceed 23 million by 2030. However, a large proportion of these deaths are preventable: all it takes is a balanced diet, reduced salt consumption, physical activity and avoiding tobacco. In short, small changes that translate into years of life.

International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

Also every 29 September, the UN reminds us of another outstanding debt: the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. It is a day that alerts us to a troubling paradox: while millions of people suffer hunger, tonnes of food end up in the bin every day.

The aim of this date is to encourage responsible consumption and end waste, understanding that food is not an infinite resource and that waste affects not only those living in poverty, but also the environment and the global economy.
