3 May: what is celebrated today
3 May brings together two powerful ideas: on the one hand, intimate family gratitude; on the other, a public reminder about rights and democracy. It is a day to say ‘thank you’ to those who support us, but also to remember that a healthy society needs free and secure information for everyone.
Mother's Day
In many countries, Mother's Day is celebrated on different dates, but the intention is the same: to pay tribute to those who care for, accompany and support the family. In Spain it is celebrated on the first Sunday in May (in 2026: 3 May), while elsewhere it is observed on the second Sunday in May. In Argentina, tradition places it on the third Sunday in October.
Beyond the calendar, the observance invites simple gestures of celebration: sharing time, talking, recalling family stories, preparing something special or simply being present. Sometimes the best gift is not material, but attention and company.
World Press Freedom Day
Proclaimed by the UN and observed since 1993, this day highlights press freedom as a democratic pillar. It serves to assess the state of journalism in the world, denounce attacks and pressure against journalists and media outlets, and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives doing their work.
The date coincides with the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration (1991), which defended the need for a free, independent and plural press. The observance recalls that without truthful information, autonomous media and protection for journalists, society is more exposed to censorship, manipulation and impunity.
World Laughter Day
The first Sunday in May is also World Laughter Day. It was created on the initiative of Dr Madan Kataria, founder of the Laughter Yoga movement, as an invitation to use laughter as a tool for wellbeing and human connection.
Laughing does not solve all problems, but it does change the way we go through them: it releases tension, improves mood and strengthens bonds. That is why this day proposes something simple and universal: find a reason to smile and share it.
