6 December: what is celebrated today
On 6 December, Spain pauses its rhythm to look at itself in the mirror of its recent history. It is a day of flags in the wind, children reading solemn articles in schools, families enjoying the long weekend and citizens remembering how, more than four decades ago, an entire country voted for words over fear. Spanish Constitution Day is, above all, a celebration of coexistence.

On 6 December 1978, Spaniards went to the polls to answer a single question: Do you approve the draft Constitution? The answer was overwhelming: almost 90% said “yes”. That collective yes marked the end of the dictatorship and the beginning of a new democratic era. Since 1983, the date has been officially celebrated as a national public holiday, a symbol of reconciliation and the political maturity of a country that chose to build itself through dialogue.
The Constitution was not merely a legal text: it was a written promise of the future. Its 169 articles set out individual freedoms, the separation of powers, recognition of the autonomous communities and the rights that underpin civic life. It was the fruit of a consensus unusual in Spanish history: politicians of opposing ideologies working together so that wounds could be turned into agreements.
Over the years, the celebration has gone beyond the offices of Congress. Today, Constitution Day is also lived in the streets, with flag-raising ceremonies, institutional events, popular races and, above all, the Open Days at the Congress of Deputies, where any citizen can walk through the chamber and sit, if only for a moment, in the same seats where democracy was forged.
6 December is also associated with the start of the Christmas atmosphere: a bridge between memory and hope. For the Constitution is not a document of the past, but a living pact that every generation must continue to interpret, debate and defend. Celebrating it is a reminder that laws alone do not guarantee freedom: freedom is exercised, cared for and renewed day by day.
