8 December: what is celebrated today
In the heart of Advent, when the world is lit up and the days are filled with anticipation, the Day of the Inmaculada Concepción arrives, one of the oldest and brightest festivals in the Christian calendar. In towns and cities, in temples and on the streets, the figure of Mary once again becomes a beacon and a promise: a symbol of purity, faith, and hope.
Day of the Immaculate Conception
Every 8 December, the Iglesia Católica honours the Santísima Virgen María under the title of the Inmaculada Concepción, commemorating the dogma proclaimed by Papa Pío IX in 1854, which holds that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception. It is an idea that speaks not only of purity, but also of the possibility of a world redeemed from its origin, of a humanity capable of beginning free from all guilt.
The first record of this celebration dates back to the 17th century in Spain, where the Inmaculada was already being venerated in 1644. Years later, the devotion would spread throughout the Hispanic world, adopting customs of its own in each country: prayers, processions, vigils, lights and songs.
In Spain, the Inmaculada is patron saint of the army and the Estado Mayor, and her feast is observed solemnly: public rosaries, crowded masses and a long weekend that brings faith and rest together. In Colombia, the eve becomes the endearing Día de las Velitas, when millions of lit lanterns turn the night into a sea of fire and devotion. In Nicaragua, people cry out in unison, «Who causes such joy? The Concepción de María!», while sweets are handed out at household altars. In Guatemala, the purifying fire of the Quema del Diablo makes way for the Virgin; in Panama, it coincides with Mother’s Day; and in Chile, the faithful climb to the Santuario del Cerro San Cristóbal, taking their promises to the feet of the Virgin.
Beyond borders, 8 December is a collective song. It is faith made light, the promise of a new beginning before Christmas. As Juan Pablo II wrote, «With the Immaculate Conception began the great work of redemption».
