8 September: what is celebrated today
8 September is a date full of international significance. In a single day, anniversaries are celebrated that cover education, health, press freedom, international cooperation, and human solidarity. Each commemoration invites us to reflect on the progress made and the challenges that still remain in these essential areas for the wellbeing and development of societies.
International Literacy Day
Proclaimed by the UN in 1965, this day seeks to assess progress in literacy, a fundamental human right and a key tool for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Since 2017, the commemoration has also included digital literacy, an essential aspect in a world where access to and use of technology define new opportunities for learning and development.
2024 theme: “Promoting multilingual education: literacy for mutual understanding and peace”. The aim is to encourage teaching in the mother tongue and other languages to strengthen cultural identity, promote understanding between peoples and build more inclusive societies.
International Day of the Journalist
Established in 1958 by the World Organisation of Journalists (OIP), this day pays tribute to the Czechoslovak journalist Julius Fucik, executed by the Nazis in 1943.
The date recognises journalists' work in defending freedom of expression and the right to information, in a context where they still face censorship, persecution and even death for practising their profession.
Fucik, author of the celebrated text “Notes from the Gallows”, wrote his final thoughts from prison, leaving a legacy of courage and commitment to the truth.
World Cystic Fibrosis Day
Since 2013, this day has sought to raise awareness of this genetic disease affecting the respiratory and digestive systems, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, appropriate medical care and support for families.
The heel-prick test in newborns is key to detecting the disease and other metabolic disorders in time, thereby improving patients' quality of life and life expectancy.
World Physiotherapy Day
Proclaimed in 1996 by the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, this day recognises the work of professionals who help restore mobility and prevent physical disabilities.
The 2024 slogan is “Physiotherapy can help your low back pain”, highlighting the importance of this discipline in treating back pain and promoting an active, healthy life.
Cooperation Workers' Day
Celebrated in Spain since 2006, it honours those who work in vulnerable areas, providing humanitarian aid and support for sustainable development.
The date coincides with the UN Millennium Declaration (2000), which set the goal of eradicating extreme poverty and improving quality of life worldwide.
Today, thousands of Spanish cooperation workers work in Africa, Latin America and Asia, offering their knowledge in areas such as health, education and human rights.
