A giant fir tree from Girona will light up Plaça Sant Jaume at Christmas 2025

Barcelona is preparing for a particularly bright Christmas 2025 with the installation of a 15-metre giant fir tree in Plaça Sant Jaume. The tree, donated by Mercabarna for the second consecutive year, comes from a sustainable crop at Can Jover, in Sant Hilari Sacalm (Girona).

The decoration will be handled by floral designer Michaela Shmidt, recognised for her creative work in the Christmas sphere. For this edition, she proposes a combination that brings together tradition and modernity, using a colour palette that includes reds, golds, silvers, earth tones, white and orange.

The fir will feature lights, ribbons and classic baubles, creating a festive atmosphere that can be enjoyed from 21 November, the date of the official switch-on, until 5 January. The best time to see it will be at dusk, when the lighting stands out against the square’s historic architecture.

The initiative strengthens collaboration between Mercabarna and the city, consolidating Plaça Sant Jaume as one of the central points of Barcelona’s Christmas. It is a place where residents and visitors gather to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere and decoration that gains prominence every year.
