Akira Cómics, Madrid’s ‘comic cathedral’, is again crowned the best shop in the world

Founded in 1993 by the Marugán family, Akira Cómics is known not only for its carefully curated catalogue, ranging from manga and American comics to fantasy literature and board games, but also for its striking interior design, inspired by a Gothic cathedral that turns every visit into a visual and emotional experience. With more than 1,000 square metres, the shop offers themed corners, fantasy children’s spaces and an expert team that accompanies every reader on their journey through the ninth art.

This second Eisner recognises Akira Cómics’ work in cultural outreach, its commitment to independent comics, innovation in the reader experience and its commitment to all generations. More than a bookshop, it has become established as a community space: it organises author signings, reading clubs, exhibitions and activities for families.

The distinction is a milestone not only for the shop, but also for Spanish comics and Madrid culture, showing that one of the best temples of comics on the planet is not in New York, Tokyo or Paris, but in the heart of the Norte de Madrid neighbourhood.
