Alcorcón strengthens its climate-controlled spaces to protect residents
Alcorcón has strengthened its network of climate-controlled spaces in response to high temperatures forecast for the coming days. The measure expands the places where residents of all ages can shelter from the heat, rest and access water and basic services during the most difficult hours.
Among the main refuges are the Centro Municipal de las Artes, Teatro Buero Vallejo and the Almudena Grandes and Miguel Delibes libraries. The Ciudad de Nejapa library is also being added, and will open on weekday afternoons.
The Centro Joven Yolanda González will be available in the mornings on working days. Its inclusion aims to offer a nearby alternative for teenagers and young people who need to spend part of the day in a cool, sheltered environment.
Older people will have extensive opening hours at the Salvador Allende and Polvoranca centres, which are open from Monday to Sunday in the morning and afternoon. The Centro Adolfo Suárez will also operate as a climate refuge on weekday mornings.
The City Hall administrative building and the headquarters of the Junta de Distrito Municipal del Ensanche Sur will likewise remain accessible in the mornings. These spaces join the municipal network to improve coverage in different neighbourhoods.
In outdoor areas, Los Castillos, Darwin and Alfredo Nobel parks have water fountains. As a new feature, City Hall has installed portable public toilets to make it easier for those seeking shade or spending more time outside their homes to stay there.
The expansion is intended especially for older people, minors, people with chronic illnesses and residents without adequate climate control in their homes. It may also be useful for workers and public-transport users during the middle hours of the day.
With this network, Alcorcón is adapting cultural, youth and administrative facilities to a function that is increasingly necessary during the summer. Checking the opening hours of each centre before travelling will make it possible to find the nearest refuge and avoid the hours of greatest exposure to heat.
