Free museums alert in Madrid: reservations you must make today to avoid missing out
International Museum Day 2026 arrives on Monday, 18 May, but the race for the best places begins earlier. This 14 May, Madrid museums already have bookings open for free activities, guided tours, concerts and special limited-capacity access. The key is simple: many museums will open free of charge, but the most interesting plans do not always work on a first-come, first-served basis. Some require advance booking, others have very small capacities and others only distribute tickets at the box office. If you want to secure the best times, it is worth moving now.
The Thyssen is the first stop: book from today
The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is one of the major names to watch. On Monday 18 May it will celebrate International Museum Day with free admission, and the recommendation is to book online to guarantee your visit, as capacity is limited.
The most delicate point lies in exhibitions and activities with a time slot. If you want to see Hammershøi. The Eye That Listens or sign up for a guided tour, it is best not to leave it until the last minute. These types of places usually fill up before general admission, especially at the middle of the day.
Anthropology: night-time concert with compulsory booking
Another plan that already requires acting quickly is at the Museo Nacional de Antropología. For Museum Night on Saturday 16 May, the museum is putting on the concert-recital El Naán Trío: Versos del páramo negro at 22:30.
The activity is free, but capacity is limited and advance booking is essential. The museum also states that bookings opened on 4 May, that only two people are allowed per booking and that every request must be confirmed by the museum itself.
If you are looking for a night-time activity different from the typical self-guided visit, this should be very high on the list.
Comunidad de Madrid: routes, workshops and special plans
The Comunidad de Madrid has also prepared a special, free programme between 16 and 18 May at spaces such as the Casa Museo Lope de Vega, the Museo Picasso-Colección Eugenio Arias, the Centro de Interpretación de Nuevo Baztán, the Museo Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, the Museo Arqueológico y Paleontológico and the Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes.
Here the rule is clear: if the activity is a dramatised route, a workshop, a guided visit or a performance with a fixed time, you need to check booking as soon as possible. These are not high-capacity plans, and they tend to sell out much faster than general admission to a museum.
What to book today, in order of priority
First, try to secure the Thyssen for Monday 18. If you want a convenient slot or a particular exhibition, it is the most urgent move.
Then check the Museo Nacional de Antropología for Saturday 16. The El Naán Trío concert is free, at night and requires booking, so it is not a plan to improvise.
Third, look at the activities at the Casa Museo Lope de Vega and other Comunidad de Madrid spaces. Dramatised routes and workshops usually have very limited places.
Then look for free guided visits at medium-sized museums such as Lázaro Galdiano, Romanticismo, Cerralbo or Artes Decorativas, if they are on your route.
Leave the large museums with free admission until last, because the problem there will be the queue more than the booking.
What you can leave for free access
Not everything requires booking. Museums such as the Prado, the Reina Sofía, the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, the Museo Cerralbo, the Museo del Traje, the Museo de América, the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas or the Galería de las Colecciones Reales usually function as major fallbacks during these days. The Ministerio de Cultura confirms that its state museums take part in International Museum Day and European Museum Night with a special programme.
But beware: “free admission” does not mean “immediate admission”. There may be long queues at the large museums. If you go without a booking, avoid the most obvious times: mid-morning and early afternoon.
The strategy to avoid being left out
The best plan is not to try to see everything. It is to book one small activity and leave a large museum as plan B.
One good combination would be:
Thyssen with booking + Prado or MAN without booking.
Another option:
Anthropology with night-time booking + a walk around another museum with free access.
And if you want something more neighbourhood-based:
Lope de Vega or Lázaro Galdiano + a route through the centre.
The important thing is not to build the whole day around an admission you have not confirmed.
Mistakes that can cost you the plan
The first mistake is to think that everything free requires no booking.
The second is to look only at the museum’s name and not the specific activity.
The third is to wait until Saturday to book plans with reduced capacity.
The fourth is to choose three fixed-time activities at points far apart in Madrid.
The fifth is not to check the museum website on the same day, because some quotas change or close with little warning.
