Alert for snow and extreme cold in Barcelona and Tarragona on the night of Epiphany

Protección Civil warns of snowfall at low elevations in Catalonia. Unusual minimum temperatures and heavy swell are expected. They recommend bringing journeys forward and taking extra precautions. The intense cold could last several days. Check the forecast before going out.

Protección Civil de la Generalitat has activated the alert for a risk of snowfall at low elevations in Barcelona and Tarragona, coinciding with the Three Kings parades. The authorities insist on the importance of taking extra care when travelling and, if possible, bringing journeys forward to avoid complications caused by the storm.

The weather forecast indicates that snow could appear in low-lying areas, although depths are expected not to exceed four or five centimetres in north-eastern Catalonia and the pre-coastal area of Barcelona and Girona. In Terres de l’Ebre and Camp de Tarragona, snowfall would be very light.

Protección Civil recommends that the public obtain information before going out, as precipitation, both rain and snow, can make movement difficult. In addition, between four and five days of intense cold are forecast, with minimum temperatures that could be around 0 degrees on the coast, between -3 and -8 degrees in the pre-coastal area and as low as -12 degrees at points in the Pyrenees.

The emergency operation has the collaboration of the Fire Service, Mossos d’Esquadra and Agentes Rurales. A warning has also been issued for heavy swell in the Empordà and strong gusts of wind, so special attention is requested for activities near the coast, especially after the Christmas storm.
