Barcelona-El Prat faces a Groundforce strike from Monday, with stoppages at three key times

Barcelona airport is facing partial Groundforce stoppages from this Monday. Travellers may be affected during three key time slots. Aena recommends checking flight status before travelling.

Barcelona-El Prat airport begins the week with an indefinite strike by Groundforce ground staff, a situation that may alter the plans of thousands of travellers. The protest, which was due to begin last Friday but was postponed until this Monday, will be repeated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in three time slots: from 5 to 7 in the morning, from 11 to 17 hours and from 22 hours until midnight.

The call affects the ground-handling services of one of the sector's main companies, responsible for operating for airlines such as Lufthansa and Etihad Airways. The unions denounce non-compliance with the collective agreement and the loss of purchasing power of Groundforce's more than 3,000 employees, which has prompted the indefinite mobilisation.

Faced with the possibility of delays or cancellations, Aena has asked passengers to check the status of their flights with their airlines before going to the airport. The impact of the stoppages could be felt especially on the busiest days, coinciding with the start of the Semana Santa holidays.

Meanwhile, the strike planned at Menzies, another handling company that operates at El Prat for airlines such as Emirates, British Airways, Latam, Turkish Airlines and Norwegian, has been postponed. Workers have decided to allow room for negotiations, although they do not rule out further mobilisation if agreements are not reached in the coming days.

Groundforce is one of the most significant handling companies in the Spanish airport landscape. Its workforce in Barcelona exceeds three thousand employees and provides essential services for the daily operation of dozens of airlines. Strikes in this sector usually have an immediate effect on airport operations, affecting both flight punctuality and the passenger experience at one of the city's main entry and exit points.
