The cycle lane between Esplugues and Barcelona gets under way: how the Diagonal will change
Mobility in Barcelona progresses with the start of works on the Sant Mateu cycle lane, which will connect Esplugues with the city via Avinguda Diagonal. The new section will make it possible to reach the future Hospital Clínic by bike and will transform access through Zona Universitària.
The project links several metropolitan cycling routes and will make journeys from Esplugues and the north of L’Hospitalet easier. The works, which will last six months, include 400 metres of two-way cycle lane and an integrated pedestrian walkway.
The works will begin without affecting traffic until May, but afterwards they will involve closures on the exit from the Ronda de Dalt towards the Diagonal until September, as well as occasional night-time closures. There will also be an impact on the sports facilities of the Universitat de Barcelona, where the rugby pitch will not be fully usable during part of the summer.
This cycle lane strengthens the metropolitan connection and consolidates the Diagonal as a key axis for sustainable mobility. It affects drivers, cyclists and users of nearby facilities, but opens the door to faster and less polluting journeys. In the short term, residents will have to adapt to closures and changes in traffic flow. In the medium term, the new infrastructure will make it possible to travel by bicycle between municipalities and reach strategic points in the city more comfortably and sustainably.
