How Madrid Metro will change in 2026: new stations, timetables and key works

Madrid Metro faces 2026 with an unprecedented transformation: new stations, technological advances and works that will affect the daily journeys of thousands of users. The network faces a year of visible changes on several key lines, with the arrival of the Mayrit tunnel-boring machine, the automation of trains and expansion towards growing neighbourhoods.

On Line 6, after the full reopening of the circular line on 1 January, stations are preparing for the installation of platform screen doors at its 28 stops. This step is essential for future automatic operation. The new closing time, brought forward at some stations, will make it possible to speed up this work. In addition, in 2026 the first tests of driverless trains will be carried out, which will run from next year.

Line 11 is experiencing its biggest boost with the Mayrit tunnel-boring machine, which is already boring the section between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal. This progress will make it possible to open the Comillas and Madrid Río stations, and connect with Line 1 at Atocha and Line 6 at Conde de Casal. At the same time, projects are being developed to link La Fortuna with Cuatro Vientos, improving mobility in Carabanchel and Leganés.

On Line 5, works to take the metro to terminals T1, T2 and T3 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport are progressing at a good pace. The aim is to connect the city centre directly with the airport. Although excavation and structural work will be carried out in 2026, the inauguration of this section is planned for 2027.

Lines 9 and 10 also feature new developments. On Line 9, the tender for the Los Ahijones-Berrocales station is being reactivated, which will serve the new residential developments in the south-east. On Line 10, the surface-level Campamento station enters the construction phase, facilitating mobility in the Operación Campamento. In addition, Madrid Nuevo Norte is accelerating the drafting of projects for a new automated line, with the start of main works on the horizon.
