Two free buses will cover Metro closures in Madrid from August
Mobility in Madrid will change during August because of improvement works on Metro lines 6 and 7. To reduce the impact of the closures, Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT) will launch two free special bus lines linking the affected sections every day of the week.
The first of these services will be the SE6, which will operate between Ciudad Universitaria and Argüelles from 1 August until 2 September. Buses will run approximately every six minutes on working days and every seven to eight minutes at weekends and on public holidays, adapting to the area's usual demand.
The route will maintain the connection with one of the main accesses to Ciudad Universitaria and with the Moncloa interchange. The first buses will leave at 6:05 from both termini and, on Fridays and Saturdays, the service will extend into the early hours to facilitate night-time journeys.
From 2 August, the SE7 will come into operation, linking Gregorio Marañón and Pitis while works are under way on line 7. This service will remain operational until 28 August and will offer approximate frequencies of seven minutes on working days and nine minutes at weekends.
SE7 buses will start running at 6:05 and continue into the early hours, with the aim of offering an alternative to the Metro along one of the busiest corridors in the north of the capital. The route will include strategic stops to facilitate connections with other public-transport lines.
EMT will reinforce both services with a fleet of up to 24 buses. As these are special lines set up because of the works, passengers will be able to use them free of charge throughout the period during which the closures remain active.
The works form part of the Metro network renewal plan carried out during the summer to minimise disruption for users as a whole. Even so, thousands of people who travel through these areas every day will have to temporarily alter their usual journeys.
Those travelling through Ciudad Universitaria, Moncloa, Argüelles, Gregorio Marañón or Pitis will find these buses to be the main alternative while the works last. Checking the new routes before setting off will help avoid waiting and plan journeys better over the coming weeks.
