Badalona to install 615 cameras to boost security in all neighbourhoods
Badalona has given the green light to one of the largest video surveillance projects in Catalonia. The City Council will install a network of 615 cameras across all neighbourhoods and industrial estates with the aim of strengthening security and improving the ability to respond to incidents in public spaces.
The project has a budget of 26.9 million euros and includes the supply, installation, and maintenance of the system until 2032. If the contract is awarded according to the planned schedule, work will begin in January 2027 and deployment will be completed in approximately nine months.
Of the total devices, 127 will be used for traffic control and 488 will be dedicated to monitoring public spaces. The City Council states that it has already defined the locations to ensure coverage in all neighbourhoods and the main industrial areas of the municipality.
The project also includes the creation of a control centre from which the Guardia Urbana will manage real-time images. The system will incorporate analysis tools supported by artificial intelligence to help detect incidents and speed up police response.
The mayor, Xavier Garcia Albiol, has presented the initiative as a technological leap for the city. The investment far exceeds the initial forecast and will be distributed over several years, with most of the spending concentrated in 2027.
According to the Guardia Urbana, the new infrastructure will improve the prevention and investigation of certain crimes, as well as provide greater support in managing traffic and emergency situations. The use of the images will be subject to current regulations on video surveillance and data protection.
The installation of the cameras will extend throughout the entire municipality, with the aim of avoiding coverage being concentrated only in the centre. The network will also serve industrial areas and other spaces with high footfall.
This project will leave Badalona with one of the most extensive municipal video surveillance systems in the metropolitan area. The real challenge will begin after installation, when the effectiveness of the project will be measured by its ability to improve security without altering the everyday use of public spaces.
