Barcelona speeds up the tram connection along Diagonal with key works
The transformation of Diagonal is entering its decisive phase. In March, the City Council will give final approval to the essential projects to link the tram. The joint investment with the Generalitat is redefining mobility and urban space.
Everyday life in Barcelona will soon change: in March, the City Council is taking the key projects to connect Trambaix and Trambesòs along Avinguda Diagonal, between Verdaguer and Francesc Macià squares, to the Urban Planning Committee. With broad political consensus (PSC, BComú, ERC, JuntsxBCN and Vox), approval by the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità is expected in April.
The plan includes duplication of the stormwater collector (Girona to Francesc Macià) and a comprehensive redevelopment of the Diagonal: 2.8 km and 115,000 m² transformed into a sustainable corridor with:
+16,000 m² of pedestrian space
+18,900 m² of green areas
+8,700 m² for cyclists (a 4 m two-way cycle lane)
Total investment: the City Council will contribute €62 million (collector) + €53 million (redevelopment between Passeig de Sant Joan and Sarrià); the Generalitat, €80 million (tram infrastructure). Works in separate lots, with an implementation period of 40 months.
The Diagonal, the city's historic axis, will become a benchmark for sustainable, pedestrian-friendly and green mobility: easier to get around, with more space to walk, cycle and enjoy. An ambitious project that redefines Barcelona residents' relationship with one of their most emblematic avenues, integrating public transport, leisure and urban life in a more liveable and modern setting.
