Barcelona will see a summer of key works on streets and public transport
Barcelona is entering a summer of works that will be felt in many daily journeys. Several major refurbishments will reach their decisive phase between July, August and September, with closures, diversions and changes to public transport, but also planned improvements to streets, pavements, green areas and space for pedestrians.
One of the most visible projects will be on Carrer de Balmes, between Plaça Molina and Ronda del General Mitre. The refurbishment will be completed in July after almost two years of work, and final paving will require traffic to be closed for one weekend. When complete, the street will have wider pavements, more than one hundred new trees and a friendlier environment for walking.
Avinguda Meridiana will also face sensitive weeks. Works between Felip II and Fabra i Puig will progress in phases from late July to mid-August. Traffic will be maintained in both directions, although there will be diversions and impacts on interurban bus routes, with changes to some usual stops.
La Rambla will remain under construction during August, especially in the Gòtic-side section. Paving works seek to improve the promenade’s resistance and adapt the space for very intensive daily use. To reduce inconvenience, traffic will be diverted via Drassanes and Portal de Santa Madrona.
Another important point will be on Ronda de Dalt. Covering work between Avinguda de Vallcarca and IES Vall d’Hebron will proceed with night closures and lane reductions to install new infrastructure. The project will make it possible to gain more than 16,000 square metres of public space once completed.
Public transport will be one of the summer’s main affected areas. Works on the FGC L8 extension at Plaça Espanya and Gran Via will cause traffic restrictions and closures on streets such as Llança. On the metro, there will be partial interruptions on L1, L9/L10 Nord and L4 at Verdaguer, as well as the temporary closure of the connection between L1 and L3 at Catalunya.
The tram will also change because of urbanisation above the Glòries tunnel. Between July and September, T4, T5 and T6 lines will interrupt part of their route. To compensate, special buses will run along the affected sections and maintain the connection in the area.
FGC will use August to renew the track between Gràcia and Muntaner, requiring the service between Gràcia and Sarrià to close for two weeks. The Vallvidrera Funicular will also be out of service for maintenance, with road alternatives while work lasts.
These are joined by Pla Endreça works, with 18 new paving projects on streets including Santaló, Plaça Cerdà, Moianès, Can Marcet, Vidal i Barraquer, Mare de Déu de Montserrat, Passeig de Maragall, Gran Via and Mallorca. They form part of an investment of more than 200 million euros in 2026 to renew public space.
The City Council has renewed the barcelona.cat/obres portal to consult works on an interactive map. This summer, checking before leaving can save more than one detour: Barcelona will gain more comfortable streets and renewed transport, but first it will have to live with weeks of closures, diversions and neighbourhood patience.
UPDATE: The first major metro disruption arrives on 25 June, with the L9/L10 Nord closure from La Sagrera. In a first phase, until 30 August, service will be interrupted between La Sagrera and Onze de Setembre, and then the disruption will extend to Bon Pastor until 6 September. TMB also recalls that the closure of Verdaguer station on L4 will begin on 6 July and that the L1 closure between Florida and Plaça de Sants will apply from 17 July to 28 August, so it is advisable to check the journey before leaving throughout the summer.
