Mobility in Barcelona and its surroundings is about to change pace. The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has launched a strategy that seeks to make the bicycle cease to be an alternative and become a leading player in daily travel. The plan, to be rolled out until 2027, includes everything from new infrastructure to direct incentives for businesses and citizens.

The AMB will invest more than €71,000 in technical assistance to coordinate projects that make it easier to use bicycles in metropolitan municipalities. Among the initiatives is the expansion of the Bicivia network, which will allow town councils to access grants to improve their cycling connections. In addition, the Biciempresa programme will lend bicycles to local companies, promoting sustainable mobility in the workplace.

The agenda also includes organising the Bicimpuls Awards, which will recognise those leading the change towards a more bike-friendly city. During April, campaigns to normalise bicycle use will be stepped up, while regulations are reviewed and communication about available infrastructure is strengthened.

The push is not limited to the streets: the AMB will take part in municipal fairs, promote bicycles at European conferences and support training through technical sessions and workshops. The creation of audiovisual materials and the organisation of events in rented spaces form part of the roadmap for bicycles to gain visibility and supporters.

The Metropolitan Bicycle Office will be key in this process, coordinating actions, generating content and advising both institutions and users. The objective is clear: for bicycles to be naturally integrated into urban and metropolitan life, enabling cleaner and more efficient journeys.

The Bicivia network, one of the plan's pillars, currently connects the main municipalities in the metropolitan area through safe, signposted cycle lanes. Its development has transformed the way thousands of people travel every day, reducing dependence on cars and improving air quality. The planned expansion seeks to cover new routes and facilitate access to neighbourhoods that have so far been outside the cycling network, consolidating Barcelona as a benchmark for sustainable mobility.
