The Volta and the Tour de France put Barcelona on the world cycling map
Barcelona is experiencing a key moment for cycling, with the Volta a Catalunya taking place and attention focused on the Grand Départ of the 2026 Tour de France. The city thus strengthens its position as an international benchmark in the sport.
The final stage of the Volta, held on 29 March, crowned Jonas Vingegaard as winner, in an edition that once again placed Barcelona at the centre of the cycling calendar. The City Council has supported the event with a grant of 200,000 euros, as part of a strategy to boost the city's global profile.
The Volta, part of the UCI World Tour, is one of the most historic stage races in cycling. This drive will continue in June with the women's edition, which will bring together teams at the highest international level and expand cycling's visibility in the city.
The next major milestone will arrive on 4 July, when the Tour de Francia sets off from the Fòrum and travels through Barcelona to Montjuïc. The city is already preparing for a day that will combine sporting spectacle and public mobilisation, with the participation of volunteers and thousands of fans.
This institutional momentum coincides with real growth in cycling in everyday life. The number of participants, clubs and licences is increasing, and bicycles are becoming more present both in sport and in urban mobility.
