Barcelona fine-tunes metro service for Christmas: more trains, special timetables and continuous New Year's Eve service
With the start of the Christmas campaign, Barcelona's metro adapts, as it does every year, to the city's accelerated rhythm. But in 2025 the operation is especially ambitious: more trains, more staff and a timetable tailored to Barcelona's December, when streets bustle with activity from early morning until late at night.
TMB will reinforce the network on every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday when shops are open, with an increase of up to 7.4% in the number of trains, especially between 5 pm and 9 pm, the period of greatest concentration of users. Lines 1, 2 and 3 will absorb most of the reinforcement, while strategic stations will also increase their customer-service and security staff.
Before December formally begins, on 30 November, the Cursa Jean Bouin will already require a 5.7% increase in trains in the morning, evidence of the flexibility TMB applies at this time of year.
The timetables, as always, mark the key days:
24 December, Christmas Eve: the metro will close at 23:00, maintaining an exceptional timetable.
31 December, New Year’s Eve: uninterrupted service so the city can celebrate without depending on cars.
25 and 26 December: metro open from 5:00 to 2:00.
7 December, eve of a public holiday: trains until 2:00.
Buses also adjust their frequency: on 24 December they will make their last departure at 22:00 and some lines will add articulated vehicles to gain capacity.
With this entire deployment, TMB seeks something more than moving passengers: it aims to ensure that, in the busiest month of the year, mobility does not become an additional problem. Barcelona, at least underground, will have a December ready to withstand any wave of travellers.
