Barcelona faces the weekend with intense heat and mugginess
Barcelona faces the final weekend of June with intense heat, clear skies and a muggy feeling. This Saturday 27 June will begin with heavy conditions from early morning and highs of around 32 degrees in the city.
The night will already have brought little relief. Minimum temperatures will remain close to 24 degrees, in tropical conditions that make rest difficult in poorly ventilated homes or those without air conditioning. In the more densely built-up neighbourhoods, the heat accumulated in buildings and streets will be noticeable from the morning.
During Saturday, the sun will dominate almost without interruption. Humidity will be one of the key factors, especially in areas close to the coast, where the thermometer may not seem extreme but the apparent temperature will be more uncomfortable.
Midday and the early afternoon will be the toughest time for walking, playing sport or spending a long time outdoors. Squares without shade, transport stops and routes along narrow streets may become especially taxing.
Sunday 28 June will maintain the same trend, even with an extra degree or two. The high will be around 33 degrees and the low will rise to about 26, bringing another very warm night and fully summery conditions from the start of the day.
No significant rain is expected over the weekend. The sky will remain mostly clear or with a few insignificant clouds, while the wind will be light and will not be enough to break the feeling of hot, humid air near the sea.
The heat will also affect leisure plans. Beaches, terraces, swimming pools, parks and outdoor activities will be heavily shaped by the middle hours of the day. The recommendation will be to seek shade, hydrate frequently and avoid prolonged exertion from midday until mid-afternoon.
Older people, children, those who work outdoors and those with chronic or respiratory illnesses should take extra care. In episodes of heat and humidity, the risk depends not only on the maximum temperature, but also on the lack of night-time rest and the accumulation of hours of exposure.
Barcelona is thus heading into a very recognisable summer weekend: bright days, full beaches and warm nights, but also homes that do not cool down, more tiring transport and streets where every patch of shade counts. The plan is to go out, yes, but with well-chosen timings and water always close at hand.
