Barcelona prepares for a summer with 24 works projects and closures on key routes
Barcelona will have a summer with less traffic, but also more works at strategic points. The City Council has scheduled 24 interventions on streets, avenues and transport networks to make use of the months with lower mobility and speed up pending projects.
One of the most sensitive points will be Avenida Meridiana. Between 27 July and mid-August, the section between Felip II and Fabra i Puig will be resurfaced, an operation that will require access closures, vehicle diversions and the reorganisation of traffic in two phases.
The municipal plan is always to keep one lane in each direction, although the changes will be noticeable in daily journeys. First, the streets that lead into Meridiana in the inbound direction will be affected and, afterwards, closures will move to the outbound direction. Interurban buses will terminate at Fabra i Puig.
Ronda de Dalt will also be affected during the summer. Between 19 July and 6 August, there will be night closures due to covering works between Avenida de Vallcarca and the area around IES Vall d’Hebron. In addition, in August traffic will be reduced from three to two lanes between entrances 5 and 6.
La Rambla will undergo another one-off intervention. From 3 to 16 August, a 40-metre section in the uphill direction will be repaved in the Foneria de Canons area. During those days, traffic will be diverted along Avenida de les Drassanes.
There will also be changes at Plaça Espanya because of works on the Ferrocarrils L8. From 6 July to 7 September, part of the roundabout will be reduced to three lanes. Carrer Llança will remain closed until the end of August for work linked to the microtunnel.
In Glòries, the diversion of the Trambesòs tracks will require the closure of Carrer Badajoz and the temporary suspension of the T4, T5 and T6 lines from 3 July to 13 September. Two alternative bus lines will be enabled to cover the service.
Public transport will also have significant interruptions. Ferrocarrils will suspend service between Gràcia and Sarrià from 11 to 23 August for track renewal, while the metro will undergo works on the L1, L3, L4 and L9/L10 Nord lines. The most notable closure will be on the L1 between Florida and Plaça de Sants, scheduled from 17 July to 28 August.
The City Council argues that concentrating these works in summer makes it possible to reduce the impact on usual mobility. Even so, the changes will affect thousands of residents, workers and public-transport users, especially on corridors such as Meridiana, Ronda de Dalt, Glòries and Plaça Espanya.
