Barcelona faces another day of intense heat and mugginess
Barcelona is once again experiencing a day marked by heat and humidity this Thursday. Temperatures will remain above the usual level for late June and the muggy feeling will be noticeable from early morning, especially in neighbourhoods near the coast.
The night will already have left a heavy atmosphere, with high minimum temperatures and little relief for those unable to cool their homes properly. In the city’s most densely built-up areas, heat accumulated in buildings and streets will make the early hours feel tropical again.
During the morning, humidity will become more pronounced in the lower part of Barcelona. Near the sea, the thermometer may not appear extreme, but the perceived temperature will be more uncomfortable because of the combination of warm air, high humidity and little ventilation.
At midday and in the early afternoon, the heat will bear down more intensely in higher areas and inland within the metropolitan area. In the Vallès plain, maximum temperatures could approach 35 degrees, with conditions much harsher for travel, outdoor work or physical activities.
The sky will generally remain clear, although the presence of some high, thin clouds during the afternoon cannot be ruled out. The wind will be light and will not be enough to break the feeling of mugginess, especially in narrow streets, unshaded squares and areas with heavy traffic.
The day will make it necessary to adapt routines. Avoiding the middle hours of the day, seeking shade, drinking water frequently and reducing physical exertion will be particularly important for older people, children, pregnant women and those with chronic or respiratory illnesses.
Public transport, shopping streets and journeys on foot will again feel more arduous than usual. On days like these, the heat does not remain solely on the thermometer: it is felt in waiting times, at unshaded stops and in homes that cannot cool down at night.
Looking ahead to the weekend, no major changes are expected. Heat and humidity will continue to define the weather in Barcelona and its surroundings, with readings typical of high summer. Only at the beginning of next week might there be a slight fall in temperatures.
Barcelona knows this kind of Mediterranean heat well, stickier than dry and particularly uncomfortable near the sea. Every summer it forces people to reorganise schedules, plans and journeys, but increasingly prolonged episodes are a reminder that mugginess is now as much a part of urban life as beaches, terraces or nights outdoors.
