More space and safety for bicycles on a key road in Barcelona
Cyclist mobility takes a step forward with the extension of a bike lane on one of the city's busiest roads, Travessera de les Corts. The project, already approved by the City Council, adds almost half a kilometre to the route and strengthens the connection along a key corridor for those who travel daily by bicycle.
The new section will retain a two-way design segregated from traffic, but introduces improvements intended to reduce risks. These include Advanced Bicycle Zones at traffic lights, which allow cyclists to position themselves in front of cars and gain visibility at the most delicate moments.
One of the most striking changes will be the introduction of so-called “red carpets” at conflict-prone junctions. These strips painted onto the asphalt clearly indicate cyclist priority, especially at turns where conflicts with motor vehicles usually occur. The measure seeks to make travel more intuitive and avoid dangerous situations.
The lane will be 2.70 metres wide and separated from traffic by physical elements such as recycled rubber pieces and flexible bollards with reflective bands. In addition, new bicycle parking will be added along the route, making it easier to use on a daily basis.
The project now enters the public consultation phase and, if there are no changes, the works could be carried out within a short timeframe, with an estimated duration of around two months. The intervention forms part of a broader strategy to adapt urban space for more sustainable mobility.
More connected and visible lanes reduce the stress of getting around by bike and make journeys faster and safer. They also change how people coexist on the street: drivers and pedestrians adapt to new priorities, and bicycles gain importance as a real alternative for everyday travel.
