Barcelona expands spaces for walking dogs off-lead
Walking a dog off-lead in Barcelona is possible, but not just anywhere or at any time. The city has more than one hundred Shared Use Areas, known as ZUC, where animals may be off-lead during specific time slots and always under their owners' control.
These zones are neither dog parks nor enclosed areas. They are spaces shared with other residents, children, runners or people simply passing through. That is why the key is to respect the signage at each entrance and check the times before letting the dog off the lead.
Barcelona has been expanding this network since 2023 and it already exceeds 900,000 square metres spread across all neighbourhoods. Each neighbourhood has at least one ZUC, although conditions may change according to the place, the type of space and coexistence with other uses.
Breaking the rule can be costly. Letting a dog off the lead outside an authorised area can lead to fines of up to 300 euros. In the case of dogs considered potentially dangerous, penalties can be much higher if the specific conditions are not met.
Within ZUCs, the animal must always be kept under control. If a person with a guide dog appears, it is recommended that you put your dog on the lead temporarily to avoid nuisance or uncomfortable situations. Coexistence is precisely what governs how these spaces function.
Cleaning remains compulsory. Owners must pick up faeces and clean urine with water, including within the designated areas. Although many ZUCs have benches or adapted fountains, there is not always specific cleaning material, so it is advisable to bring it from home.
Potentially dangerous dogs have stricter rules. They may enter these zones, but must always wear a muzzle and a non-extendable lead. In addition, they may only be walked by licensed adults, and no more than one is permitted per person.
Beaches have their own calendar. During the bathing season, only Llevant beach permits dogs in a designated area. On the rest, entry is prohibited from Easter until October, except for assistance dogs. For people living with a pet, the recommendation is simple: check the municipal map before going out and do not rely on what applies in another neighbourhood or at another time of year.
