Barcelona expands its network of public toilets to strengthen community life
Barcelona is preparing for a quiet but significant transformation of its urban space: the installation of 150 public and accessible toilets at various locations around the city.
The initiative, approved by the City Council's Committee on the Presidency, Security and Internal Affairs and promoted by Barcelona en Comú with the support of Junts, ERC and Vox, addresses a shortfall that has long been highlighted.
At present, most of these services are concentrated in tourist areas, while neighbourhoods with a greater presence of vulnerable people have scarcely any alternatives. The shortfall has led to hygiene problems and tensions among neighbours, which the City Council is seeking to tackle with this expansion.
The plan sets a maximum deadline of three months to present the final strategy, which will include self-cleaning, accessible and equitably distributed toilets. Beyond being a health matter, the measure aims to become a tool for improving coexistence and dignifying the use of public space.
With this commitment, the City Council is sending a clear message: coexistence is also built through everyday infrastructure, capable of improving daily life without making major headlines but with a real impact.
