Barcelona starts the weekend with storms before returning to 30 degrees
Barcelona will begin the weekend looking to the sky. The early hours and morning of Saturday, 22 August, will be marked by rain and storms, but conditions will improve as the day progresses. Sunday 23 will bring more heat, humidity and a maximum of around 30 degrees.
The most difficult period will be concentrated in the early hours of Saturday. Barcelona’s coastline has a yellow warning in force for rain and storms until 6 in the morning, with the possibility of accumulating up to 30 litres per square metre in one hour. The storms may also be accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts.
The instability may still bring some showers during the morning. AEMET raises the probability of precipitation to 75% in that first half of the day, while from midday onwards the risk falls practically to zero and clear spells will begin to open up.
Saturday’s temperatures will range between 24 and 29 degrees. The atmosphere will remain humid, but the absence of extreme heat will make it possible to resume outdoor plans during the afternoon. Terraces, beaches and the streets of the Festa Major de Sants will have better conditions after a difficult start to the day.
Sunday will be different. The minimum will fall slightly to around 23 degrees and the maximum will reach 30, with intervals of cloud and long periods of sunshine. The chance of rain will be much lower, although a brief isolated shower during the day cannot be ruled out.
The beach will remain an option for those wanting to make the most of the last stretch of the weekend. Meteocat is keeping the water at Barceloneta at around 27 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday, while the ultraviolet index will rise to high values, especially on Sunday.
The nights will not bring much relief either. With minimums between 23 and 24 degrees, Barcelona will remain within tropical-night values and many flats will retain some of the heat accumulated during the day, although far from the torrid early mornings that have marked other weeks in August.
The weekend therefore has two quite clear sides: umbrellas and caution during the early hours of Saturday, followed by a rapid improvement and a much more usable Sunday. Those with plans outdoors would do well to wait a few hours before considering them lost: after the storms, Barcelona will quickly return to summer.
