Barcelona is building a new neighbourhood next to La Sagrera with more than 2,000 public homes
Barcelona is reinventing itself once again with a major new urban project: the creation of an entirely new neighbourhood around the future La Sagrera station.
The City Council has approved the start of the land readjustment plan for the Prim area in the Sant Martí district, which will give rise to a new neighbourhood with 3,610 homes, 2,089 of which will be publicly owned.
This new district will not only provide affordable housing—1,889 protected homes and 200 facilities-based homes for young people and older people—but is also shaping up as a space designed for community life, with green areas, a large square, educational, health, cultural and sports facilities, and a direct connection to Camí Comtal park and the city’s most important future railway station.
The urban planning proposal, born from an ideas competition and a participatory process, has a symbolic heart: the Can Riera farmhouse, which will become the backbone of the new neighbourhood. The design, signed by the Forgas team of architects, integrates heritage, nature and the future in one space.
With this commitment, Barcelona reinforces its model of a compact, accessible city designed on a human scale. La Sagrera is no longer just a station: it is the starting point for a new way of living in the city.
