Barcelona turns water into play: more children's spaces to cool off this summer
This summer, Barcelona is turning water into play and public spaces into cool refuges for children.
The city is opening four new areas with water play — in Glòries, Trinitat Vella, Les Corts and Plaça del Maresme — bringing the total number of spaces designed for splashing, laughing and escaping the heat without leaving the neighbourhood to eight.
The initiative is not merely a nod to summer leisure: it forms part of the City Council's Pla Clima and the Pla del Joc a l’Espai Públic, two strategies committed to a more liveable, resilient city designed on a human scale. In a context of increasingly extreme temperatures, these play areas also function as urban oases where cooling down becomes a right.
The water play facilities will be active from June to September, in two time slots (morning and afternoon), and have an intelligent push-button activation system that ensures responsible use of water.
From Parc de les Rieres d’Horta to the Canòdrom, via Bon Pastor and Llac de la Creueta del Coll, the water-play network continues to grow. In addition, to stay hydrated, residents have more than 1,700 fountains across the city at their disposal, which can be located with the Fonts BCN app.
A clear commitment: less scorching asphalt, more children playing among the jets.
