Barcelona will refurbish Carrer de la Jota to improve accessibility, lighting and green areas in Nou Barris
The area around Nou Barris is beginning to change with an intervention awaited for years. Barcelona City Council has approved the refurbishment of the final section of Carrer de la Jota, where it joins Avinguda Meridiana, a key point for mobility in Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta. The work seeks to resolve historic accessibility problems and improve the quality of urban space.
The works will begin in the third quarter of the year and will last for about five months. With a budget of 626,000 euros, the project includes improving lighting, renewing paving and modernising basic services, as well as reorganising the space to make getting around easier.
The design will retain the single-level platform, but strengthen the connection with Meridiana. New trees will be planted in areas where none previously existed, street furniture will be installed and overhead services will be buried, eliminating visible cabling and improving the appearance of the surroundings.
The intervention is aligned with the timetable for works on Meridiana, which are expected to end in 2026. This coordination will allow a smoother transition between the two roads and improve connectivity in an area with heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
The project forms part of Pla Endreça, which has already driven more than thirty interventions in the neighbourhood. These improvements are joined by other nearby interventions, such as the refurbishment of Carrer Amílcar or the transformation of Santa Pau, Emili Roca and Desfar, which will widen pavements and increase tree cover.
This type of intervention, although localised, has a direct impact on everyday life in the neighbourhood. Improving access, lighting and green spaces not only makes getting around easier, but also redefines how streets are used and perceived, reinforcing urban quality in residential areas such as Nou Barris.
