Barcelona gives the green light to linking the tram along Diagonal, but the project depends on budgets
Barcelona City Council has approved the project to connect Trambaix and Trambesòs along Avinguda Diagonal. The intervention will transform one of the city’s main thoroughfares, although its execution still depends on funding.
The plan envisages linking the two tram systems over a 2.8-kilometre section, gaining 16,000 m² for pedestrians and adding almost 19,000 m² of green areas. It also includes key improvements such as duplicating the collector between Girona and Francesc Macià, essential for water management.
The project has gone ahead with the support of PSC, BComú and ERC, while Junts, PP and Vox have positioned themselves against it. Beyond the political debate, the main obstacle is financial: without approved budgets at the City Council and the Generalitat, the works will not be able to begin.
The planned investment exceeds 100 million euros in urbanisation and infrastructure, with participation from both administrations. The next step will be validation by the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità and the signing of the financing agreement.
This connection is emerging as a decisive element for mobility in Barcelona: it would make travel smoother, help reduce private-vehicle use and transform the public space on Diagonal. Its impact reaches thousands of daily users and reshapes one of the city's key corridors. From now on, its development depends on budget agreements: without funding, the project will remain stalled; with it, it could become one of the most significant urban transformations of the coming years.
