Barcelona deploys 200 shade oases as an urban climate shield

The City Council has announced the creation of 200 new shaded spaces across the city as part of an ambitious strategy against climate change. With an investment of €13 million through to 2027, more than 50,000 m² of shade will be created through the planting of 9,000 trees and the installation of 194 structures, such as pergolas and awnings.

This summer, 70 of these installations will already be unveiled, located at strategic points such as Plaça del Mar, Rambla del Carmel and Sant Andreu Comtal station. Most will be temporary elements, placed where asphalt and sun bear down, and where it is not possible to add vegetation.

Mayor Jaume Collboni has described the plan as a “protective shield” that will make Barcelona a more resilient and liveable city even in the hottest months. Children will be one of the project's main focuses: in 2025, shade systems will be installed in 66 children's play areas and 15 school playgrounds, with work scheduled for the summer holidays.

Barcelona wants more shade, yes. But also more climate justice, more collective wellbeing and more public space in which to stay, even when the thermometer rises.
