Barcelona rolls out 227 points to recycle your Christmas tree this January

Barcelona is launching a special recycling campaign for Christmas trees and plant decorations, setting up 227 collection points across the city’s ten districts. From 7 to 17 January, residents can leave their trees at these locations to prevent them being abandoned on public roads and help reuse plant waste in municipal parks and gardens.

The City Council has reminded residents that trees must be handed in completely clean, without any kind of ornament or decoration, to facilitate their correct recycling as plant material. Municipal services will be responsible for periodically collecting the trees left there.

In the previous campaign, 10,268 trees were collected and taken to the municipal nursery for shredding and maturing. This process produced 195 cubic metres of plant material, used as mulch in the city’s green spaces, improving moisture retention and soil aeration.

The recycled material will be distributed across Barcelona’s green spaces during the first half of the year, according to the council. The aim is to turn the trees into a useful resource for maintaining urban gardens and parks.

The network of collection points covers every neighbourhood, from Ciutat Vella to Sant Martí, passing through Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris and Sant Andreu. The locations include emblematic squares, parks and gardens, as well as strategic points on avenues and main streets.

To consult the full list of collection points, citizens can check the information organised by district. The City Council insists on the importance of removing all decorations before leaving the tree, thus guaranteeing its recycling and subsequent use in the city’s urban greenery.
