Nou Barris restores the name of Joan Salvat-Papasseit to its square
The emblematic square in Nou Barris has regained the name of Joan Salvat-Papasseit. The change comes after an intense neighbourhood campaign and the backing of the full council. The decision puts an end to a name imposed during the dictatorship. The administrative process is already underway.
The decision, approved by the plenary session, comes after three years of neighbourhood mobilisation driven by the Restituïm platform. The aim: to reverse a name imposed in 1941 during the dictatorship and recover the original name from the 1930s.
The administrative process is already under way and will require updating signage, maps and transport systems at one of the district’s busiest points. Even so, the Ajuntament expects to complete the change before the end of the year.
The restoration also represents recognition of Salvat-Papasseit, one of the leading figures in Catalan poetry, and strengthens the link between the city and its cultural heritage.
