Horta velodrome returns to debate with a retractable-roof proposal
The Tour de France passing through Barcelona has reignited debate on the future of Horta velodrome. Barcelona en Comú has proposed a refurbishment including a retractable roof and full improvement of the venue.
The velodrome, inaugurated in 1984, was designed with the possibility of adding a roof in the future, although this was never carried out. Now, the current context of cycling and the visibility brought by the Tour have put that option back on the table.
The proposal is not limited to the structure. It also includes redeveloping the surrounding area, improving access and removing temporary elements such as the current marquee. The aim is to update the space and increase its use for both sport and the public.
The venue remains a historical landmark. Its track, designed by specialist Herbert Schürmann, hosted international competitions and was key to the city's Olympic preparation. Today, it retains that symbolic value within Barcelona sport.
The initiative opens a new scenario for the future of the facility. The arrival of the Tour acts as a catalyst for reviewing the condition of sports facilities that have been awaiting renovation for years.
