Barcelona launches new penalties against uncivil behaviour and focuses on dogs
Barcelona is strengthening its fight against uncivil behaviour with new penalties and a direct street campaign. The goal is clear: to reduce conduct that affects daily life in neighbourhoods and heavily frequented areas such as La Rambla and the Raval.
The “Poca vergonya” campaign puts the focus on dog owners. Regulations require urine to be cleaned with water and provide for fines of up to 300 euros for not picking up excrement, one of the complaints most often repeated by residents.
The problem goes beyond isolated cases. Urban cleaning entails a high cost and, even so, dirt and bad smells remain present, especially in areas with high density and heavy foot traffic.
Tension is rising in the street. Residents demanding greater civic-mindedness encounter uncooperative attitudes, making it difficult to correct behaviour and generating conflicts in shared spaces.
The reinforcement coincides with a greater presence of campaigns and checks. The intention is to prevent before sanctioning, but also to make it clear that certain attitudes are no longer tolerated in public space.
