Fundació Joan Miró presents Kapwani Kiwanga's largest exhibition
Barcelona is strengthening its cultural agenda with the arrival of Kapwani Kiwanga's first major retrospective in Spain. From 30 April, Fundació Joan Miró will host ‘Changing States’, an exhibition that connects contemporary art, research and reflection on power in urban life.
The project, developed together with Martina Millà, brings together key works from the artist's career and three previously unseen pieces created for this space. Through materials such as sisal, clay, glass and textiles, Kiwanga transforms anthropological research into installations that invite visitors to rethink how resources and control structures influence territories and bodies.
One of the exhibition's strands is the textile series Capacidad de carga, which enters into dialogue with Joan Miró and his connection to the land. The route moves on to pieces such as Medidas suaves and Estudios de la subducción, where the artist contrasts geological time with human history, broadening the view of the present.
The exhibition extends beyond the galleries with a public programme that includes conversations, performances and poetry with international figures. The educational work with pupils from L’Hospitalet also stands out; they have taken part in creating collective pieces as part of an artistic and social process.
The Fundació's commitment reinforces its role as a bridge between Miró's work and contemporary practices. By incorporating global discourses and opening them up to local participation, this kind of project turns art into a tool for interpreting the city and its transformations from new perspectives.
