Barcelona's beaches begin the season today with lifeguards, beach bars and changes to the sand

The start of Barcelona's bathing season brings new developments that directly affect those who enjoy the coastline. From this weekend until 4 October, the city's beaches activate key services such as lifeguarding, bathing assistance, beach bars, public toilets and information points. The City Council has launched a special operation to guarantee safety, cleanliness and accessibility in a summer marked by the effects of recent storms.

This year, the preparation works have been especially visible on the southern beaches, where the loss of sand after the winter has made earth-moving necessary. Thousands of cubic metres of sand have been moved to restore affected areas, such as Sant Miquel and Barceloneta, and thus balance the coastal profile. Erosion remains a challenge, despite the presence of groynes and submerged breakwaters, and natural regeneration has not been sufficient on some stretches.

The lifeguard and rescue operation begins with 33 professionals, a figure that will rise to 54 in the months with the highest attendance. People with reduced mobility have bathing-assistance points, with the one at Nova Icària being the first to be operational. In addition, all public toilets on Barcelona's main beaches will be open from 10:00 to 19:30, and the beach bars retain their public-use service.

Cleaning is being reinforced both on the sand and in the water, with more bins and vessels specifically for collecting waste in the bathing area. At night, cleaning teams will remain active to keep the coastline in optimal condition. The Guàrdia Urbana is increasing its presence to ensure coexistence and safety in coastal spaces throughout the season.

In recent years, municipal studies have detected a trend: while the northern ends of the beaches gain width, the southern ones are shrinking noticeably. This phenomenon is particularly evident at Nova Mar Bella, where the sea already reaches the base of the new rock armour. The sand movements seek to offset these imbalances and protect the most vulnerable areas from future storms.

Barcelona's beaches are not only a leisure space, but also a thermometer of the environmental changes affecting the city. The municipal Plan Clima includes measures to preserve the coastline, such as adding and redistributing sand, and installing infrastructure to curb erosion. Each bathing season poses a logistical and environmental challenge, in which public cooperation and constant adaptation are essential to maintaining the quality and accessibility of these urban spaces.
