Barcelona launches a website to make it easier to access protected housing
Finding public housing in Barcelona will now be a little less complicated. The Ayuntamiento has revamped its housing website so that residents can more easily find information, check available assistance, and carry out procedures, at a time when getting an affordable flat remains one of the city's biggest challenges.
The new platform operates at barcelona.cat/habitatge and reorganises content so that users do not have to get lost among menus, forms and technical explanations. The idea is that anyone can better understand what options they have and which steps they need to take.
One of the most important changes affects the Registro de Solicitantes de Vivienda de Protección Oficial de Barcelona. Registration can now be completed entirely online, without travel or paper documentation, a key step forward for those who need to sign up for draws and calls for protected homes.
The register is the gateway to applying for public housing in the city. Being registered does not guarantee getting a home, but it is essential for taking part in allocation processes and accessing certain protected-housing developments.
The website also strengthens its virtual assistant, designed to resolve questions about renting, aid, regulations and housing-related procedures. The aim is for information to be more direct and for users to find answers without always having to go to a municipal office.
The City Council wants the portal to be especially useful for people in vulnerable situations or with greater difficulty navigating administrative procedures. In April, the housing website was the sixth most visited of the council's sites, with 238,000 visits, a figure that shows the level of demand for information in this area.
The renewal forms part of the Barcelona easy plan, a municipal strategy to simplify the relationship between residents and the administration. In practice, this means less bureaucratic language, more visible steps and navigation designed to resolve concrete problems.
The change does not on its own solve the lack of affordable housing, but it may reduce a significant barrier: the difficulty of understanding and completing the procedures. In a city where every call matters, knowing where to register and how to do so can make a difference for many families.
