Barcelona will unveil its first mechanical pedestrian ramp in Montbau

The Montbau neighbourhood, one of the city’s steepest, will be the first to have this solution, which will transform the demanding Poesia street into a more accessible walk. Work will begin in January 2026 and is expected to finish in summer 2027.

The ramp will cover more than 200 metres of elevation change with a 10% incline, connecting Vall d’Hebron promenade with Vayreda street. It will be installed in several sections to respect entrances, gardens and homes, making it possible for the first time to climb this slope without effort, which until now was a daily challenge for many neighbours.

The project, with a budget of 7 million euros, will not only make mobility easier, but will also renew pavements and lighting and reorganise traffic. One uphill lane for cars will be removed and 41 parking spaces will disappear, although new areas for motorbikes and loading and unloading will be created.

During the works, bus line 135 will temporarily lose three stops, but the route will be adapted to maintain service. In addition, archaeologists will supervise excavations for possible historical finds. A change that promises to relieve legs and modernise the urban landscape.
